Fall Athletic Roundup, and Winter Athletic Preview!

12 Dec

“It’s about everyone bonding and showing character and heart.”

Applewild’s fall athletic season came to a recent close, and we are so proud of our student-athletes and their efforts on our field hockey, soccer, and cross country teams over these last couple of months.  Boys’ and girls’ soccer wrapped up wonderful seasons – both teams showed great determination and sportsmanship.  Referencing the boys’ soccer season, eighth grader Massimo of Fitchburg stated “The effort was there the entire season. The team came together and progressed really well.  Sometimes a team’s record doesn’t truly show what type of team you are. It’s about everyone bonding and showing character and heart.”  Girls’ soccer coach Mr. Paulo Valentim, stated “The Applewild Girl’s Soccer team had a fantastic season!  From our first game to our last, we looked like a different team. It was amazing to see some of the younger girls step up to roles of leadership, demonstrating true camaraderie and sportsmanship.  The entire team grew together, showing outstanding heart and perseverance as the season progressed.”

“This team learned how to compete.”

Our co-ed field hockey team worked hard throughout the season, pulling in a variety of both new and returning players.  Eighth grader Emily of Harvard stated “Our returning players really acted as leaders and helped the new players develop and learn the game.”  Valerie, an eighth grader from Fitchburg, added “During our last game especially, everyone came together and played really hard. We put everything we had into that game.”  Field hockey coach and Applewild Athletic Director, Mr. Kyle Gillis, stated “This team learned how to compete. They worked very hard all year and showed tremendous improvement.”

“Don’t be afraid to run that extra hill!”

During the season, our cross country squad competed in eight different races. Coach Mr. Ray Collins said “The team showed great spirit and positive energy throughout the whole season.”  Highlights of the season included two victories vs. Worcester Academy, another vs. Parker Charter, and a nail-biter vs. Bancroft School.  Brandon, an eighth grader from Groton noted “We had a tough first meet, but after we worked really hard and improved as the season went on.  Everyone encouraged one another and by the end of the season, we had all came together and bonded.”  Tristan, an eighth grader from Hollis, NH added “We played as a team and everyone was supportive of one another.”  Eighth grader Wil from Townsend noted “I felt we really got to know one another and build great camaraderie – don’t be afraid to run that extra hill!”

Winter Sports Preview, the GO Group, and Ski Club

With a memorable fall sports season behind us, Applewild’s winter athletics are in full swing! Both boys and girls basketball started practice in the middle of November, and the teams are working extremely hard to build both individual and team skills.  Game play for both teams is underway, and our Athletic schedules can be found on our Applewild website under the athletic calendar tab.  Additionally, the Upper School GO Group (Go Outdoors), led by Mr. Todd Goodwin, has been actively exploring the many acres of conservation land that neighbors our campus.  We hope you can join us for a game, or stop by to sled some time with the GO Group!

Additionally Applewild Ski Club will begin January 5, 2018. We are extremely lucky to use Wachussett Mountain as our home slopes!  Our instructor, Ms. Breezy Riposa, and students are eager for more snow and looking forward to the start of another ski season!
