The April 15 week was a challenge for all of us. I was gratified to hear from a third grader on that Friday that it had been a great week to be at Applewild. He had particularly enjoyed AppleWILD About Arts and Earth Day activities. When I mentioned this to his mom, she told me that she was grateful that her kids were coming to Applewild during the week, where she knew they would be safe and cared for.

The events from Boston have been chilling. We have all been faced once again with what to say to our children, what to let them see and hear, all the while knowing that we cannot control their awareness – and at the same time dealing with our own reactions. We came to school today gripped by the unfolding news of what we can only hope is the concluding chapter with limited damage.

Welcome back to spring(?)! We all look forward to sun, melting snow, and crocuses, even as we know that New England will provide us with some curves. It’s what makes us unpretentious and resilient!

One of my favorite days is the Friday prior to spring break, when we have just completed an energizing couple of weeks, highlighted by the play, Writer’s Café, and History Day – and this year our “Bring Your Parent” initiative in Lower School. The students leave on Friday with great excitement, knowing how much they have accomplished (and perhaps a bit pleased to be starting their vacation!).

I was struck by the number of our eighth grade “This I Believe” speeches that considered in one way or another the role that technology plays in our lives. Some of the students extolled the virtues of the internet and the power of technology, while others suggested occasionally turning off the gadgets and trading digital connectivity (and the “quick draw of the smart phones”) for genuine connectivity with those in our lives. Alternatives included the value of real time friendship and exploring in the outdoors (including sports – and recess!) – having real experiences in real time and paying attention in the moment.
