Applewild Alumni Spotlight

David Long ‘63

Education:

- Pomfret Academy

- Albion College

- University of Montana (MFA in Creative Writing)

Current Work:

I’m a fiction writer—short stories and novels [most recent novel The Inhabited World (2006) from Houghton Mifflin]; and I teach in a low-residency MFA Program at Pacific University in Oregon.  I have two grown kids, Montana and Jackson, both married, and two grandkids.  I’ve been married to my wife Susy since 1969.

Favorite Applewild Memories:

Sounds crazy, but I don’t . . . I have hundreds of memories [in some I’m either running around in pair of green shorts or not knowing the answer to a math problem].

Teachers:

Mr. West for encouraging my reading of fiction [and for his very wry humor], and Mrs. Stergios for passing on her passion for choral music.

Applewild Impact:
The age of email, Google, Facebook, etc., has let me get back in touch with some Applewild classmates.  I can’t speak for the others, but in my heart of hearts I’ve always felt bonded to this small cohort in a primal way, so this re-connection has been satisfying on a level almost beyond words.  Mitzi, Norm, Joey, Marcy, Lynn, Sharon, John . . .  Applewild was our common launching point.
