We are very proud of the second grader's achievements this year. We can't believe how quickly it has gone by. The end is near!
In reading, we are finishing our guided reading groups. Our next unit will be on Aesop's Fables. We will be divided into three heterogeneous groups that will read and study some of the popular fables written by Aesop. Some of these fables are: The Ant & The Grasshopper, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and The Fox & The Grapes. Children will complete activities and games after reading these fables. The morals of the fables tie nicely into Applewild's values statement.
In math, the children will finish working on their multiplication practice and tables from 0-10. Please have your child continue to review these tables at home in preparation for third grade. We will end the year with our final chapter, Measurement and Probability. In this chapter, the children will learn ways to measure length, weight, and volume. They will also learn how to predict how likely or unlikely it is that certain things will happen. This is always a fun chapter to complete during the last month of school, with lots of hands-on activities.
We will be busy as usual in Language Arts. In Fundations, the children will be working on Units 7 & 8. In Unit 7, we will review the open syllable type, y as a vowel and the- y, -ly, -ty suffixes. In Unit 8, we will review the r-controlled syllable, sounds of ar and or and combining r-controlled syllables with other syllable types. In writing, the children are finishing their "Budding Author" booklet of writing for the month of April. After finishing our "Circle Stories", the children will be reading them to the Kindergarten class. Plan to look for these stories in our yearly Apple Blossom publication that will be published this month. The children are also working on a poetry unit and have composed their own "diamante" and spring poems. More poetry is to come! We will finish the year in writing working on second grade remembrances.
In Social Studies, we will be learning about these continents in our Junior Atlas program: Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica. The children will also read from our Scholastic News, which discusses current events around the world. We also will be preparing for our Grandparent's/Special Person's Day, Mother's Day, and our theme culmination this month.
We also will be saying goodbye to our "Grandfriends" at Highlands. After our last regular visit in May, we'll celebrate with a final sing-along and pizza party in June. We've enjoyed establishing intergenerational friendships this year, and both the children and their "grandfriends" will miss our monthly visits, we're sure. Thanks to all of the parents who helped us out this year at the Highlands. We appreciate your help with all of the crafts and other projects.
What a wonderful year is has been! Thank you for sharing your children with us. We look forward to seeing them continue to grow and develop in third grade.
Our final writing entries are wonderful "diamante" poems (check out the shape) the children have composed.
