Family-Style Lunch at Applewild
Lunch time at Applewild isn’t typical. Students gather family style at assigned seats with an adult member of the community at each table, where the students work together to set the table before the meal and take turns waiting on each other. At the end of the meal, students clear the table. At Applewild, laughter and conversation go hand in hand with lessons on pleases and thank yous.
Our lunch menu is carefully planned to include locally grown fresh produce from our own school garden. Students learn about the benefits of composting and are responsible for the composting on campus. During their Science class they learn to test soil. The students are responsible for planning, planting, and maintaining the garden. Everyone helps to harvest the garden and we all benefit from the lessons learned.
Daily lunch selections include a fresh salad bar with seasonal offerings, fruit, yogurt, and during the cooler months, an assortment of nourishing soups. We always offer a vegetarian option.
After lunch, students socialize, swap jokes, and return to their classes, well rested and ready to tackle the afternoon’s adventures.
