Happy and Working Hard in Upper School!

11 Dec

It was wonderful to usher in the holiday season with our all-school Thanksgiving Feast a couple of weeks ago. Sitting with our buddies, sharing delicious food and reflecting on all that we are grateful for is something we know has great value!

Everyone returned from the Thanksgiving break ready for the busyness and excitement of this short interlude before the winter vacation. Kids and teachers are getting in the spirit of the holidays, and all are looking forward to the concerts next week! Meanwhile,  students are playing basketball, making the yearbook, building furniture and making art, hiking around campus and its beautiful surroundings and oh yes- working hard in classes! The first semester winds up in mid January. Teachers will be sure to give kids a grade update before the winter vacation.

We focus on giving during this season in the Upper School. Our Student Council is leading us in helping others through our canned food drive for the Cleghorn Neighborhood Center. In addition, the Student Council is leading “Operation Gratitude.” For this drive, students are invited to bring in items that will be shipped to soldiers on active duty. We are also participating in the coat drive spearheaded by our fifth graders. I am pleased that we are helping others in these ways. I believe that there is an opportunity for everyone to participate through these varied and thoughtful initiatives.

Each advising group will take time to enjoy each other and the spirit of the season next Friday morning before our all-school concert. The groups will have small breakfast parties and do some sort of thoughtful giving to each other. Your child’s advisor will arrange this and will let you know if your help is needed. Groups may do “gifts” or “giving” very differently, and all will have a cost limit that we hope is reasonable for families. Let me or the advisor know if this presents a hardship for your family.

Most importantly, we keep the idea of our tremendous good fortune foremost in our minds! We are so lucky to spend our days at Applewild, where we are each nurtured and challenged in a safe and caring community.

I look forward to hearing the music our kids will share next week. The concerts are yet another way that Applewild puts kids in the spotlight! They are the culmination of many hours planning, teaching and encouraging by Mrs. Schlesinger and Mr. Bonanno and it is always a brilliant way to watch our kids shine yet again!

I look forward to seeing you all at the concert!

Happy Holidays!
