Third Graders’ Study of the American Colonial Period Inspires Critical Thinking and Collaboration

During the first semester of third grade, students dive deeply into the history of the early American colonial period. To inspire and enhance the important skills of critical thinking and collaboration in our students, teachers frequently partner across disciplines and seek creative opportunities to share knowledge.

From the third graders’ trip to Plimoth Plantation, to crafting Native American clay figurines in Art class complimented by typed and edited descriptions in Writing, to hosting their own Colonial Day on campus with additional collaboration from Shop, PE, Music, and Science departments, students are engaged in an active and multi-faceted learning experience. In continued support of their studies, third graders recently visited the Concord Museum and Wright Tavern where they experienced daily life in a colonial town – they mapped out colonial Concord, pierced tin plates, made soap featuring colonial herbs, and interacted with artifacts from colonial New England and the Revolutionary War!
