November News from the Big Apple

November
Erica Reynolds Hager

It was great to see you all at Parent Conferences Monday. It is such an important time for us to discuss your children and their growth. As a faculty we will share our discussions with each other and reflect on common themes that come up in our conferences.  All of this informs the way we support your children in these next weeks and months.   Thank you for your part in these important conversations parents! Do reach out to your child's advisor, teachers or me any time! The Sports Banquet on Tuesday was another nice event, filled with the spirit of our community, highlighting the value of our sports program. I know you appreciate our coaches as much as your children and I do!

The newness of the year is over, the day-to-day routine is well established and expectations remain steady and high. Next Tuesday we will transition from fall to winter sports and options. With the change in seasons comes much to look forward to, our all-school Feast before Thanksgiving, and December concerts in a little more than a month, for example. Our students have such rich experiences and we look forward to sharing them as a community.

Friday is our Oxfam Assembly and the sixth grade Hunger Banquet. This is an annual event for sixth graders. I hope you hear about it from your children. This simulation pushes our students to experience, in a safe way, food insecurity in our world and asks them to think about how it can be solved. With careful guidance from Mr. Goodwin and their advisors, sixth graders realize the imbalance of access to nutritious food when there is actually plenty for all in our world. It is a thought-provoking experience, and has elevated awareness and inspired action for Applewild students for many years.

We have so much to be thankful for at Applewild. I am thankful each day for the joy of working with your children and my tremendous colleagues!

Best wishes for a wonderful November and Thanksgiving.
